Our Donor Sperm Programme
Waterstone Clinic has extensive experience with donor sperm treatments and a dedicated team to guide you.
Our specialists will recommend you use donor sperm in an IUI, IVF, ICSI or Shared Motherhood treatment cycle, as appropriate. Donor sperm can be used by single women, same-sex couples and heterosexual couples.
Please Note: Waterstone Clinic works with international banks and does not accept donations.
Supporting You Throughout
Our dedicated Sperm Donation Team will coordinate the process for you and guide you through each stage.
Getting started is simple. The first step is to meet with one of our consultant specialists to discuss your situation. They will then recommend a treatment plan for you.
Donor Sperm Process:
Step by Step
Initial Meetings: We will advise which treatment plan would be best for you and then you will meet with our donor sperm coordinator and also have an implications counselling session.
Donor Selection: We will guide you on how to navigate the sperm bank databases and how to choose a sperm donor. We will facilitate the importation of the sperm to the clinic for your cycle.
Treatment Cycle: When you are ready, you can start treatment.
Pregnancy Test: Two weeks after your treatment procedure, you will take your pregnancy test and arrange your early pregnancy scans with our clinical team.
Who Are the Donors?
We are delighted to partner with Seattle Sperm Bank, a donor sperm bank based in the USA. Waterstone Clinic is the only clinic in Ireland that Seattle Sperm Bank is working with, and this partnership will give our patients much more choice when choosing a sperm donor. We also partner with European Sperm Bank in Denmark.
All of the donors are identifiable. They are physically healthy men of a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Most donors are university students. The donor banks screen the donors regularly, following international best practices. Only about 5% of applicants are accepted by the banks to donate and receive a small remuneration.
How Successful is Donor Sperm Treatment?
Donor sperm can be used with a variety of treatments, including IUI (intrauterine insemination), IVF treatment and Shared Motherhood. Our ethos is to use the least invasive treatment possible, and a majority of our patients using donor sperm can use a simple IUI treatment to build their families.
The success rate of Intrauterine insemination (IUI treatment) with donor sperm is more successful with donor sperm than with partner sperm: we have a 28% success rate of babies born through donor assisted IUI treatment.
Treatment Coordination Package includes:
Treatment coordination and administration by the Donor Sperm team, implications counselling, laboratory administration, and Dept of Health reporting.
Donor Sperm can be used with IUI, IVF/ICSI, Shared Motherhood and Egg Donation treatments.
Donor sperm is purchased in “straws”, and the costs are set by the sperm banks (which may alter). A minimum of one straw is required per fertility treatment. We advise patients to order more than one straw from their preferred donor to increase their chances of pregnancy, save time, and keep transport costs to a minimum.

Recent Press coverage of Donor sperm concern
You may be aware that there have been recent media reports regarding the potential serious health risks to children conceived using donated sperm from a specific donor sperm supplied by European sperm bank.
The team at Waterstone Clinic would like to reassure you that sperm from this donor has never been supplied to or used by patients of Waterstone clinic.
European sperm bank has provided more detail on the specifics of this case. See here for more information.
Please be assured that if you have donor sperm stored with us, or if you have children conceived using donor sperm, we will always notify you of any concerns related to your donor’s medical history once informed by the relevant donor bank. We maintain strict protocols with all sperm banks in relation to such medical notifications and donor blocks.
