Dr Xiao Zhang
Head of Research and Development
Dr Xiao Zhang initially studied medicine in China, receiving an M.D. and practicing as a general surgeon. He then went on to become a researcher, studying ovarian aging and ovarian tissue cryopreservation. Dr Zhang received a Ph.D. in Reproductive Medicine from Peking University, where he completed research studies on the role of oxidative stress in oocyte diminishing mechanism during a woman’s adulthood, this study was published by Cell Research of Nature Publication Group. In 2003, he achieved the first pregnancy in China from frozen eggs. For his excellent contribution to fertility research, Dr Zhang received an honorary professorship in Zhengzhou University, China. He then relocated to Cyprus where he took up a position as clinical embryologist. Here, Dr Zhang introduced Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis screening due to a high incidence of thalassemia in the local population. He then continued his research and successfully set up egg and embryo vitrification in 2007. Dr Zhang joined Waterstone Clinic in 2009, as Head of Scientific Research and Development. He has led the development of new patient centred services such as vitrification and PGD. Dr Zhang is a member of ASRM, ESHRE, ICE and the Irish Fertility Society. He is an ESHRE certified Senior Embryologist and his research has been published extensively in Europe and around the world, such as Human Reproduction and Fertility and Sterility.
