Dr Xiao Zhang
Head of Research and Development
Dr. Xiao Zhang initially studied medicine in China, receiving an M.D. and practicing as a general surgeon. He then went on to become a researcher, studying ovarian aging and ovarian tissue cryopreservation. He received a Ph.D. in Reproductive Medicine from Peking University, where he completed research studies on the role of oxidative stress in oocyte diminishing mechanism during a woman’s adulthood. This study was published by Cell Research of Nature Publication Group. In 2003, he achieved the first pregnancy in China from frozen eggs. For his excellent contribution to fertility research, Xiao received an honorary professorship in Zhengzhou University, China. Xiao then relocated to Cyprus where he took up a position as clinical embryologist. Here, he introduced Preimplantation genetic diagnosis screening due to a high incidence of thalassemia in the local people. He then continued his research into clinical applications and set up egg and embryo vitrification successfully in 2007. He joined Waterstone Clinic in 2009 as Head of Scientific Research and Development. He has led the development of new patient centred services such as vitrification and PGD.
Xiao is a member of ASRM, ESHRE, ICE and the Irish Fertility Society. Xiao is an ESHRE certified Senior Embryologist and his research has been published extensively in Europe and around the world, such as Human Reproduction and Fertility and Sterility.
