HSE IVF Funding
The HSE funds fertility assessments and treatments. To be eligible for funding, you must meet some criteria. These have changed since the scheme began in 2023, so we have laid them out here.
(updated October 2025)

The HSE Criteria
The HSE have a number of criteria and they are all noted on the HSE website, but we detail the main criteria here.
The first criteria is that you must be referred by your GP to your local HSE Fertility Hub.
Your GP will refer you if you are a resident of Ireland and also meet the relationship criteria that you are in a heterosexual couple and together longer than one year. Anyone who needs donor sperm or donor eggs (including same sex couples and single women) are not yet eligible for funding.

Medical Criteria
There are a number of medical criteria including age and BMI.
The female partner must be between the age of 18-40 and have a BMI of between 18.5 and 30. The male partner must be between 18-59 years of age.
There are also some lifestyle criteria around alcohol intake and smoking.

Family Criteria
You will still be eligible if you and your partner have one child together (or a child from a previous relationship).
You will not be eligible if both of you have living children from previous relationships or have 2 or more children together.

Previous Treatment
You are still eligible if you have had a cycle of IVF treatment previously, however you cannot have any embryos remaining in storage.
You will not be eligible if you have had sterilisation procedure to prevent pregnancy (e.g. a vasectomy).

Choice of Clinic
Once you are approved for HSE funding, you can select the clinic you would prefer for your care.
Waterstone Clinic is an approved provider and we will see you within 6 weeks of your referral to us.

If You're Not Eligible....
The criteria are strict, and not everyone will meet them. Don’t let this stop you from achieving your dreams of a family.
